File Extensions Resource

For techie people like me who's been all over the internet and makes a living out of the information technology, this website is a very helpful resource for finding out what file extension names are for. File Extension Library has a comprehensive database of file extensions. Each file extension has a brief description that are pretty much straightforward and easy to understand. The file extension also contains pointers on how to open the specified file type.

In relation to what I do for a living, here's a quick info on JAR files. JAR stands for Java Archive. It is a group of files bundled together into one archive file. Some JAR files are executable. Within a JAR file, you can find java classes which are compiled java code, metadata and other auxiliary files. JAR files can be opened in the same way as how ZIP files are opened meaning you can use archiving tools to open it such as WINZIP or WINRAR.

The description of JAR files above is just one of the many file extension types that you can find in the File Extension Library website. Check out their site to know more about unfamiliar file extensions such as djvu, daa, mdf, lst, mov, sfv, among many others.
